There are many small particles in our atmosphere - some of them natural. However, 25% of manufactured particles come from road vehicles - and these tend to be responsible for high levels during pollution episodes.

PM10 are particles below 10µm in diameter (very tiny). These vary in composition - those emitted from vehicles are mostly carbon based. Their small size allows them to penetrate deep into the lung where they can cause respiratory symptoms and chest pain. Exposure can lead to increased risk of death from heart and lung diseases. The Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollution estimated that these are responsible for 8100 deaths and 10500 hospital admissions in the UK per year. They are also responsible for the blackening of buildings seen in many towns.
