Hydrocarbons
These are compounds made of hydrogen and carbon which contribute to summer smog, and can cause throat and eye irritation. Benzene is emitted from both petrol and diesel vehicles and is known to cause cancer.
Carbon monoxide
In the UK road traffic is responsible for 69% of CO emissions.
Carbon monoxide reduces the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood and can cause headaches, fatigue, and at very high levels, death.
Noise
Transport noise causes disturbance for many people. There a very few remaining areas of the UK that are unaffected by noise from roads.
