In the UK, 43% of UK NOx emissions come from road vehicles.

There are a number of oxides of nitrogen present in the atmosphere but it is nitrogen dioxide which gives rise to health concerns as it can affect the respiratory and immune systems. It also contributes to global warming.

Nitrogen dioxide reacts with other pollutants to form ozone - a constituent of summer smog. Ozone can cause eye and throat irritation and respiratory problems. It also damages plants and materials. High levels are found in rural areas: the monitoring station at Lullington Heath in East Sussex commonly records the highest ozone levels in the UK.
