Try public transport

Give the bus or train a go, whether it be for a work journey or day out to visit friends. Think of all those things you can do while the train or bus take the strain - read a book or newspaper, chat to the kids, prepare for your meeting, watch the world go by....

Walk

Walking is probably the most neglected way of getting around these days. In 1989/1991 we walked on average 237 miles a year. By 1997/1991 this had dropped to 191 miles. 25% 0f our car journeys are under 2 miles - that's a 30 minute walk at most. Consider which of your short journeys you could walk.

Cycling

Cycling is cheap, fast, clean and healthy. Research has shown that regular cyclists enjoy a fitness level equivalent to being ten years younger! Many people are put off cycling because of fears about safety. Cycling itself is not dangerous - but some roads can be. Sounds like hard work? Cycling is actually easier than walking as the bike takes most of your weight! Most towns and cities are increasingly providing safe routes for cyclists and cycle parking. Contact your local authority or national cycling organisations to find out more.

Sustrans promote sustainable transport - cycling and walking - and in 2000 celebrated the completion of 5000 miles of the UK cycle network. Find maps of safe routes here.
